That will work, at least on newer hardware. Newer IDE stuff is a lot
more flexible than it used to be. You can put a drive alone anywhere on
the controllers and boot from it.
Not if it's jumpered to be a slave, you can't. Or, at least, the
spec says you shouldn't be able to.
