Both OS X and Linux are installed - but it should be trivial to let linux
use the OS X partition.

As long as the Linux variant can use HFS+. (Which I believe Yellow Dog can.)

OS X can use a BSD UFS partition, but not the standard Linux partitions or file systems. However, you do loose functionality (like complete loss of "classic" mode) and, as I understand it, Apple does not Qualify UFS, so things will work as long as Darwin has no problems with whatever is happening.
