It certainly could. It depends entirely on the application. For processor-bound situations, your money is FAR better spent on Intel or AMD chips. (Unfortunately.) Oh make no mistake there are still RISC boxes out there that will give x86 a run for its money CPU-wise. They just aren't being made by Sun.
