as a sidenote, the debian automated build system does something like
this, it's pretty cool.  it creates a mini-install of debian in
a subdirectory, puts the source package in there, downloads any extra
dependencies (the package's Build-Depends line) compiles it, and finally
makes a binary package.  the cool thing about this is you can make
unstable packages even on a stable box and vice versa.
