The problem may not be with ghostscript but the X font. Try generating
the .ps file with a different font and see how ghostscript renders it.
One of the biggest problems with X is font selection. It's very possible
that X is giving your word processor program one font and ghostscript
another even though they are requesting (basically) the same font.
