To be fair the article was NOT a HOWTO article. The title was "Understanding and Replacing Microsoft Exchange" and is heavily slanted to the Understanding side. It does give some good background on the challenges involved in creating a replacement. They do provide a URL to a HOWTO at http://www.arrayservices.com/projects/Exchange-HOWTO/.
