[PLUG] PHP RedHat question

RedHat 6.2, Mysql 3.22.32  & devel packages, PHP 4.0.1.

I upgraded PHP to 4.3.1.  

I get:
"Cannot load /usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so into server: 
/usr/lib/apache/libphp4.so: undefined symbol: mysql_real_escape_string"

Tried all manner of ./configure --with, & path to .so in apache conf 
file and path in ld.so.conf.

Before I go crazy and install gnu make, mysql 3.23, a new Perl DBI, new 
MySql drivers for Tomact, rebuild Apache....etc

A) Is there a quick fix, I have a number of projects going. Link Static 
perhaps?
B) Put PHP 4.0 back (need PEAR tho).
C) Put a new HD in and install RH 7.1, mount the old drive.
