[PLUG] RE: plug digest, Vol 1 #582 - 8 msgs

I am interested in a docking station, if it would be compatible with an
IBM Thinkpad 760 series. I have been looking at the newsgroup for a
while.

For which computers? I would love one for an HP ZE4100 series or an IBM

T21 series.

They were for Toshibas, but were gone by the time I arrived this

In Indonesia!

Someone in Indonesia wants to order a large quantity of Linux Laptops
from me. I'm researcing export licensing and restrictions now - just
wondering if anyone has had any dealings with this type of thing?

Thanks

Bought. Tried. Am returning the Belkin card. Ordered and received an
ORiNOCO Gold card for $60 as suggested by gr. The ORiNOCO has better
sensitivity (although connectivity has not improved) and it has the "MC"

external antenna connector. Most important; it's Linux compatible
without a hassle!

If you only run Windows, the Belkin is fine. If you prefer to run
Linux, stay away from the Belkin for now. A driver for the Atmel chip
does exist, but it doesn't sound like it's ready for prime time.

More reading for those with time to kill: I decided to replace (only on
the laptop) RedHat 7.3 with Mandrake 9.1. It works almost flawlessly.
The ORiNOCO was detected and configured during install, as was the
mini-PCI 100baseT NIC, but I had to manually straighten out the network
settings after install. X and power management worked out of the box.
(That may be due to the fact that I had an existing suspend partition.
I don't know.) The mini-PCI WinModen just needs a driver. So the
hardware seems to be much more happy under Mandrake 9.1 compared to
RedHat 7.3.

Yes, I've been warned from my vendor that this is most likely a scam.
They will either use a stolen credit card or ask for my bank number to
"wire" funds. They haven't done either yet - so the saga continues.

The easy solution if they want to wire funds is to set up an account
just for wiring funds to, and then transferring the funds to a regular
account. Just inform them that the funds have to clear first and it
will take however many business days your bank requires to post funds
from a transfer. Most banks with an interest in legal commerce can deal

with this problem for you easily. Credit cards however are a difficult
thing to police indeed and they cost you money with the risk that a
transaction can be placed on hold at a minimum.

Personally I'ld hope they were legit but wait until I had the cash on
hand before counting on it. Like your vendor said most likely a scam,
but I remember ordering 10 computers once for a group of hobby
computerists. The store selling just could not believe it was a real
order at first and we had a certified check to give.

Another thing you might want to look into is a 'Letter of credit' where
essentially their bank gurantees that you will get the money. But I am
not too sure how it works and how safe it is, you will need to
investigate.
