Any file system.

I used to have a process that setup some control files and then
kicked of a dosemu session. The autoexec.bat would invoke
the program and a series of stackey macros would stuff keys
into the keyboard buffer to execute it. It would then process
the data and exit when done, allowing the next step of my
shell script to run.

In the old days there might have been a console access issue
that force you to run certain programs on the "real" console,
though. Depended on the program and might have been fixed.
