If it did a non-standard format, AFAIK there's nothing you can do except run EZ-Bios on a bootable system to extract it. 

If it did a standard format, then it shouldn't matter.

And this is why I wanted to perform a tape backup on your drive before I did anything drastic.

You may need to get the system or an equivalent system running again under Win98 and EZ-Bios, then do your extraction to another medium.
