Re: [PLUG] name server question

Why not just use the "hosts" file? Linux and Solaris have /etc/hosts
files. Windows has a c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. I'm
guessing that OS X also has a hosts file somewhere.

I am running a small home network behind a router. I do not have a
domain name, but am using dyndns to give my web server a domain name.
My network consists of the following machines:
A Windows xp box (running services for unix)
A Solaris box
A Mac running os X
a Linux laptop
I am using NFS, SSH, and VNC on these machines and I currently connect
to them using their IP addresses. I would like to set up a name
server so I can refer to these machines by name. I am new to this.
What should I use that will work with all these platforms? I am
thinking of adding a Linux box to my network and using it as the
server. What kind of specs does it need?
