I personally find the load average really useful only after watching a
machine for a while and getting a feel for it. It varies machine to
machine and OS to OS.
I agree with the previous comments on the number of CPUs versus the load
average. But I think it really only makes sense when you know how your
personal machine responds at different load levels.
