Where is the kernel file and what is kernel file name? I don't see it in /boot. I saw config-2.4.20-8 initrd-2.4.20-8.img module-info-2.4.20-8 System.map-2.4.20-8 vmlinux-2.4.20-8 in /boot. Ther are not that big. vmlinuz is the kernel image with the modules located in /lib/modules/2.x.x/ There is no hard core name for the kernel image and if you want to name it my-kernel-2.x.x that is OK. I use bzImage because that is what make bzImage produces when you compile the kernel. If you create a custom kernel, the commands make modules make modules_install will create the modules for your kernel along with creating installing them in /lib/modules/ the initrd is a compressed file system that is run totally in memory. Ususally initrd images are used on boot floppies and cdroms.
