I have had Samba running on RH 7.x and 8.0 connecting with Win98 and WinXP. There are some good reading somewhere in /usr that I can't think of at the moment (ah, found it... /usr/share/doc/samba-v.v.v/docs/textdocs/) that gives some good FYI stuff, especially the encryption option. As someone mentioned you need to look at the SECURITY= option. Which option you choose depends on what you are trying to do. I use Samba as a Primary Domain Controller, therefore I use SECURITY=USER and each user and machine has an entry in passwd and shadow. (Note: This can be a bitch to get running right. I've gone through this several times and always enjoy the challenge.) SECURITY=SHARE is easier. You only need a single user, such as the FTP user, for everyone. With SECURITY=SERVER Samba uses another machine/PDC to do the authentication. What other questions do you have?
