Never mind, I finally figured it out.  It's rather complicated.

In the end, it causes povray to generate a png for each frame of the
animation.  It looks like I can use ImageMagick to convert to mpeg,
but I still have a couple planning islands to get by (stuff that's not
apt-get'able).  It's pretty cool, though.
