[PLUG] 2.4.18 --> 2.4.22 = slower, "glitches"

Last night I compiled a 2.4.22 kernel (newest package in
Debian stable) for my machine to allow it to access
my new 4-in-1 card reader (MMC, CF, etc.).

I did make a bunch of sound and network cards modular,
to allow for switching one without a recompile. The
previous kernel (which was a recompile of the source
that came with Libranet 2.0) had this also.

The problem is that the machine is now noticeably slower,
and also seems to "hang" for very brief periods every
now and then. The slowness is definitely not in my
imagination. The "hangs" are mainly noticeable when
there's audio playing or a lot of motion (easy to see
in glxgears, for example).

I did choose optimization for my Athlon (as in the 2.4.18
kernel), so that's not the speed difference. Has anyone
ever compiled a kernel which works but has the symptoms
above? Was 2.4.22 just a bad release? Any recommendations
appreciated!

Greg
