You can also use initrd to load any modules necessary for booting, such
as disk drivers, etc. This way, the kernel itself stays a smaller size.

Why are you including initrd in a kernel that is not an installation 
kernel?  Initrd is primarilly for setting up a ram based file system 
that provides the minimum to boot and install a Linux system.

Of course there are other uses for initrd and cramfs like running a 
system like knoppix off of a compressed file system on a cdrom.  In this

instance, the system runs as slow as the cdrom drive.
