I am running: Debian sarge 2.4.23-1-686-smp libarts1 1.1.4-3 libartsc0 1.1.4-3 esound-common 0.2.29-1 libasound2 0.9.8-2 libasound2-dev 0.9.8-2 I checked all of the above packages for outstanding bugs similar to my problem and found none. If I am in the audio group and try to start kde at "checking periferals" it freezes my whole system. I can't ssh into or change to another console. I have left it for 15 minutes and it never comes back to life. When I am not in the audio group everything is fine except no sound. I have also disabled arts in Control Center -> Sound and Multimedia -> Sound System, stayed in the audio group and was able to boot. I also tried from a console: cat /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav > /dev/dsp which hung my system. I can't find any errors in my logs. The only thing that I see which is error like is: i810_rng: RNG not detected This is from dmesg which is below. Here is some more ifo that might be useful: quincy@fred:~$ ls -al /dev/dsp lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Jan 26 14:55 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0 quincy@fred:~$ ls -al /dev/dsp0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Jan 26 14:55 /dev/dsp0 Excerpt from lspci: 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) >From dmesg: i810 TCO timer, v0.05: timer margin: 30 sec (0xe460) (nowayout=0) Intel 810 + AC97 Audio, version 0.24, 22:36:56 Nov 30 2003 PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:1f.5 PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 00:1f.3 PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 02:03.0 PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:1f.5 to 64 i810: Intel ICH4 found at IO 0x9400 and 0x9800, MEM 0xe2800000 and 0xe2000000, IRQ 5 i810: Intel ICH4 mmio at 0xf89a6000 and 0xf89a8000 i810_audio: Primary codec has ID 0 i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels. i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode. i810_audio: Resetting connection 0 i810_audio: Connection 0 with codec id 0 ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALG32 (ALC650) i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0, new EID value = 0x05c7 i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0, DAC map configured, total channels = 6 i810_rng: RNG not detected TIA, Jon -- Trooper Jon S.
