Worked. My Red Hat distro did not have a backend link called /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb, and linked to smbspool. Once I created this symbolic link -- and restarted cupsd -- the printer configuration was possible either via terminal or browser (http://localhost:631). Set up two windows printers and printing is fine. Thanks.
