hey,

just to add to what the other folks were saying about mount/fstab
options, the reason why your chown/chmod'ing wasn't working is because
the fat based filesystems don't store that information, and it's
actually being simulated by the linux vfs system.  that is, the files
don't have explicit owners/permissions set on them, so you have to tell
your system what permissions to give them when you mount it.
