I've only needed to work with .rar files in Window$.  I use 7-Zip under 
WinXP.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/

There is one main file which knows to combine itself and all other files 
into one.  It might be the lowest numbered file, or a unique file.  I 
work .rar so infrequently that I basically guess at it each time until I 
get it to work.
