Boot with Knoppix to see what happens.  If there is still a problem, try 
flashing the BIOS, or whatever you do with a crappy Compaq.  Or, as a 
test, switch off ACPI in the BIOS.  Also, try booting into safe mode.  
And check the boot log for failures.
