I want to dump files onto CD's for backup purposes. I have more files than will fit on a single CD, but I want each CD to stand unto itself (in case of loss of some of the others). Ideally, each CD would simply have a fragment of my file system on it or at least a single but whole tar archive. Does anyone know a tool that does this? I haven't found one (google, freshmeat). In a way, I hope there's not, as it sounds like fun to code. The family of algorithms behind it is called bin packing algorithms, and the problem (in general) is NP-complete. In a broader way, of course, I hope it exists and I can just use it, since who knows how long it will take me to get around to writing it... -- Jeff Jeff Abrahamson <http://www.purple.com/jeff/> +1 215/837-2287 GPG fingerprint: 1A1A BA95 D082 A558 A276 63C6 16BF 8C4C 0D1D AE4B A cool book of games, highly worth checking out: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1931686963/purple-20 Attachment:
