Re: [PLUG] Verizon DSL and Ubuntu Linux

Just installed Ubuntu Warty (4.10). This Debian derivative seems to
do things much differently than the Red Hat distros that I have gotten
used to.

Can't get Ubuntu's adaptation of rp-pppoe (which worked on Red Hat and
Mandrake) to work. It seems to connect, but can't even ping.

Has anyone gotten Ubuntu (or another Debian) to work with Verizon?

I have gotten the standard rp-pppoe to work with two other distros. Should I compile and install it (have not yet learned the intricacies of maintaining a Debian system)?
I downloaded the .deb from the Ubuntu universe, but have no idea how to use the package manager or even what it is called (synaptic doesn't seem to recognize the file).

Do I need to uninstall the existing pppoe app before installing Roaring Penguin? How is this done (i.e. what is the equivalent of rpm -e)?

I really want to replace my aging RH 7.3, but haven't gotten this basic stuff to work with other distros.

I wanted to include the output of plog:

$ plog
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: PAP authentication succeeded
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: peer from calling number 00:D0:BA:04:D4:82 authorized
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: not replacing default route to eth0 [192.168.0.3]
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: local IP address 141.xxx.xx.xx
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: remote IP address 10.x.xx.x
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: primary DNS address 151.197.0.38
Nov 17 11:43:16 localhost pppd[4242]: secondary DNS address 151.197.0.39

The DNS and remote IP are correct as confirmed by a working connection.

The modem is on eth1. Eth0 is the lan and the address is indeed 192.168.0.3.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
