did a little leg work and found a nice list of RAID IDE Controllers compatible
with Linux:

it would probably be easiest if you had (3) PCI IDE
cards,
hooked up 2 drives to each card.
Then use the software RAID.
That would be the cheapest way.
Can (3) IDE cards be installed? I've never installed
more than 1
