I am using Debian, I should know to check the following before a whole
day has whacked me on the head with its long frustrations:

  /usr/share/doc/kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686/README.Debian.1st.gz:

    PS/2 Mice
    ---------
    If your PS/2 mouse does not work, make sure that the modules psmouse and
    mousedev are loaded.

That worked.

It was difficult explaining to my dog that my delight did not mean
we would be playing fetch for the rest of the evening.  But it's very
nice to be out of console mode.
