thanks for the --initrd, I'm trying it right
now but it will take me another 3 hours to find out
(make clean'ed it by mistake).

re: lilo, i'm too used to it but I'm learning my
way again, perhaps i'm going to learn grub one of
these days.  I dont even know what devfs/udev
is all about as I'm re-learning all of this
as I go on (having been used to redhat 7.2/7.3
for maybe 3,4 years?)

re: initrd.img, I checked there was no link, no
new initrd produced in /boot.  that --initrd
hopefully shoudl do the trick.
