If you have the time, try out the Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) live cd.  I've
booted 2 laptops (dell insprion and dell latitude) and it
auto-configured X correctly for both (as well as the built-in network
card and sound).  Then try using the x.org config file under the other
distro - you can probably just mount the hdd after booting from the
livecd.
