Thinkpads have always been good quality (don't know if that will continue).

HP is also putting out some pretty solid notebooks lately, and they seem to be 
putting out some pretty inexpensive systems. I'm running Kubuntu / Windows XP 
on an HP 1230us. *Everything* works under Linux. I figure the Kubuntu distro 
deserves some credit. Haven't had a notebook install go so smoothly ever.

HP (like IBM) is pretty Linux friendly these days, which doesn't hurt.
