Off topic, but ubcd4win is a great set of BartPE plugins, making it much more useful as a livecd for windows repair.

knoppix works too.



For data recovery from an NTFS partition, the Linux NTFS driver does seem to be much more resilient than the Windows one when faced with a failing drive (or cracked-out permissions). But that doesn't seem to be what the original poster wants/needs.
