[PLUG] best way to install gui on debian base system?

I am playing around for the first time with vmware's player.
http://www.vmware.com/products/player/
On a Win2K host, I have installed a debian netinstall image:
"debian31r0a-i386-netinstall-kernel2.6"

So I went through the base config routine and chose "desktop", whereupon it apt-got a bunch of packages but no x or window manager.

I've installed distros before but they all installed x by default; I've only changed drivers or added window managers. Any tips on the best (i.e. easiest and most likely to produce a working result) way to do this? I don't even know what video hardware I "have".

Thanks,
Greg
