You could also use a manual serial switch box.  I have a couple DB-25
switch boxes that I'm trying to get rid of.

When I made some serial null modem cables, I used regular network cables
and added DB-9 adapters.  That way I could easily change the length of
the cable as needed.  Phone line also works.
