I am the proud new owner of a machine with an Athlon64 cpu (not FX, though). I'd like to try installing kubuntu on it (I would use the stable 5.10 version, unless there's some compelling reason to use the beta). Of course the thought occurred to me to try the AMD64 architecture for it but I have read some of the forums and documentation and it seems like a hassle, especially if I'm going to have nontechnical users on my machine. Software of particular concern is: *nvidia drivers (available, seem to work well) *openoffice (works under chroot) *wine (works under chroot) *flash player (not available. I don't care for this myself but mom and sis might when they visit) *older games (quake 3, UT, etc.--anyone tried this?) Is anyone using the AMD64 version of ubuntu for a desktop system and is there any real benefit to be gained in desktop use to offset the apparent hassle? I'm thinking not, especially if I use a k8 kernel instead of the stock one on x86. Greg Helledy -- Privileged/Confidential information may be contained in this message.
