Re: [PLUG] OT: T1 providers

Most of the time when you purchase a T1 from a smaller ISP you are only buying a T1 into their network and then you go through their backbone provider.  But, their T1s are usually cheaper than going straight to a backbone provider.  All depends on what your prorities are and what your budget can provide you.

If you wish to know what backbone provider a certain ISP uses, try doing a traceroute.  Though with a traceroute, you cannot tell if they are using multiple backbone providers or not.  But at least you will know one of their backbone providers.

I currently have a T1 through Captel, I need to get another T1 but I want one that uses a different backend provider. I'm not sure if I'm wording this right but I've heard that many smaller ISP basically sell lines they lease from bigger ISPs like Verizon. Am I correct so far? When I call around and ask who these people use for their backend they act like they have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm I asking the right question? And do you guys have any recommendations for T1 providers in the Fort Washington area?

Thanks
