This iPod shuffle died about a year ago. There was nothing I could do to restore it. Linux recognized the device but wouldn't mount it. Windows and mac wouldn't even recognize it. I left it turned on for a year so that the charge would die in hopes of being able to just reinitialize it. Windows now sees it but iTunes can't restore it. I had fixed another shuffle in Linux by running fsck to determine the corruption. fsck wouldn't repair it, but I could mount the iPod in Linux, delete the corrupted file and then iTunes could restore it. But on this iPod, neither fdisk, cfdisk nor fsck will access the device. The kernel correctly identifies it, but reports I/O errors.
