I've never used it myself, but I heard that Google released an OCR
software as open source, and it runs on Linux:

or extracted image -- exist for Linux?

The other alternative is the ability to add comments as is possible with the
full acrobat windows/mac product.  Are there any tools available for Linux
that allow commenting?
