Re: [PLUG] [slightly OT] (Mac OS X) Is it me or can't you do this with Linux?

I think Linspire is consumer focused. Xandros is the kinda like the business flip-side of Linspire.

Thanks to all who responded.

The idea of getting test machines from Apple is intriguing.

There are a couple of us who will be supporting whatever we eventually get with considerable experience with [K,X]Ubuntu and Fedora.  I was wondering about experience with distros, like Linspire, which I understand to be designed to be the least shocking to the non-technical user who has never seen anything but 32 bit windows -- the kind of people who freeze when MS updates office.

The MAC OSX disks may also be DVD.

Apple has a program for corporate users where you can try before you
buy. We have a few users, as a result of a short demo, that have
switched to MAC platforms from Redhat for our scientific computing. The
switch was quite painless, the users have not had a single complaint and
the learning curve was minimal. We still use our corporate PC (Windows
XP) for some things and moving back and forth between the two platforms
does not cause any problems.

I work in a windows shop.  We have been informed by our PC vendor that
only
Vista will be available as of January.  As IS and the users will all be
forced into a change, we decided to explore non-MS alternatives,
including
Linux distros with windows-looking interfaces and Mac OS.

We figured we'd try to install OS X (10.4.2) in a virtual machine and
test it
out with the app servers we will have to keep for the time being.  I
have
some Mac install discs that came with out iBook, but it doesn't seem
that
they are ISO 9660 as k3b won't recognize the source discs.

Is it me or are the Mac install discs not ISO 9660?

And, what suggestions for a Linux desktop distro that minimizes the
shock to
reluctant converts from windows?
