JP- THANK YOU. you've given me some GREAT recommendations. i think i already have most of those texts, too (i got  gift of a TON of o'reilly e-books a friend gave me for my birthday; i'm still trying to get through all of them).

Brian- i knew about kerio but had totally forgotten it. thanks for the reminder! i'm trying  to do this on a budget of "broke" but i'll keep it in mind as a last-ditch effort!

There are two approaches you might want to try when starting out.  The first
is to use the default MTA of your distribution, which is probably a good
ideas as it will likely be the best maintained and documented.  The other
approach is to find someone willing to teach you and use whatever they use.
Other than that, make sure you pick either Exim or Postfix, as most others
have fallen out of favour.
