well, the reason i ask is that it may be trying to use the old nvidia driver (nv, a built-in driver part of X, i believe) which is incompatible with some (if not all?) of the newer cards (which use the nvidia-driver driver, straight from nvidia). that doesn't explain the IDE errors, but i've been dropped to busybox before because my nvidia card wasn't supported by the nv driver...
