Jeff my understanding is and I'm no expert when it comes to cable is that since digital cable everything is controlled at the box. You have everything that Comcast offers all at the termination of the cable in your home or business.

Filters are left over from analog days where they would block signals selectively on the line.

It's short and shouldn't fry your brain too much. Specs have  way of doing that, but this is only like 2 web pages.
