[PLUG] Is the Atom an x86?

I'm thinking of buying an cheap motherboard, and the atom processor seems to
be filling the low end.

Is the atom an x86? What is the 'equivalent" kernel architecture (ie: 386?
586? 686?)

Could I, for example, run Debian on the atom?
