[PLUG] XKCD, Map of the internet, and "Fractal" mapping

This is a great "cartoon" that I've printed out and use as a resource:

http://xkcd.com/195/

Question: Does anybody have more information about these kinds of fractal maps?

Searching for fractal maps on Google just gives me hit after hit of mapping that
uses fractals - but it's all about game maps -or- patented fractal image
compression -or- worldmap generators -or- somebody's proprietary ($) software
-or- ....

Many of these end up using Windows/IE only "ActiveX" components (read: exploit
highways.)

Perhaps I should use Bing instead of Google? <ducks>

[Remember, BING stands for "Because It's Not Google].

TIA.
