I'm thinking you just need to do an ldconfig to update the dynamic clink cache?  Try that and let us know if it helps.

So, obviously, MySQL cannot find a file called 'librt.so.1' even
though it's clearly there at:
/lib/librt.so.1

I can start mysql with:
mysqld_safe

but it refuses to run as a service

What do I need to do to repair:
service mysqld start
