Sorry to reply to my own post but I just had a thought. Are you running with selinux in enforcing? What does "getenforce" say? If you are in enforcing, does it work if you do setenforce 0? If is does, you most likely need to relabel something. Look at the audit logs and run setroubleshoot. I just installed the same update on one of my machines and mysqld restarted as expected.
