I just had a thought (mark the calendar). Are constraints turned on during import? You mentioned earlier that dups are your biggest pain. Perhaps the answer might be to import without constraints, attempt to add constrains, and then query for errors/anomalies when applying constraints fails. At least then, you don't have to reattempt imports -- you can fix the data in-place and retry applying constraints/keys.
