I use a bunch of computer-controlled (radio) scanners.  It's not like 
these guys have discovered modern tech like usb ports and linux.  I find 
that one can buy generic usb to serial cables that come with perfectly 
functional drivers (unfortunately for the Redmond Menace only - haven't 
tried in WINE).

This might be a starting point.
