Re: [PLUG] install centos6 from a debian rescue system |
I don't know if CentOS has the equivalent of debootstrap (I have never used CentOS), but the following _should_ work (ymmv) for any Linux, presuming that CentOS will go into a different partition from the Debian rescue image:
- Offline, install CentOS to the hard drive image of a virtual machine.
- Boot the Debian rescue image and delete all files in the CentOS partition.
- Copy / rsync the files from the hard drive image to the partition where CentOS is to reside.
- Edit the etc/fstab of the CentOS image to reflect the partitions / UUIDs / file systems of the server.
- Edit the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file of the Debian rescue system - if s/he doesn't have access to the grub screen of the server during bootup, make the CentOS image the default.
- With crossed fingers, boot the server.
- Edit the /boot/grub/grub.cfg of the CentOS machine (this can be done before the reboot).
- Reboot the server, again with crossed fingers.
- Install grub on the MBR to look for its configuration in the CentOS partition.

___________________________________________________________________________Question, I have a friend who wants to install CentOS6 on a dedicated server that he has no physical access to, but he has ssh access to a debian rescue system. I am familiar with installing debian via debbootstrap, is there something similar you can do with CentOS6? i.e. do some kind of bootstrap with chroot?
