Or make sure that when traversing trees you do it in a manner that
does not follow links.

While almost all my data is on a single partition I use symbolic links
to make everything under /home important, and link to anything that is
less important and store it elsewhere on the filesystem.  Then I can
point my backups at /home and not have to mess around with a ton of
backup exclusion rules.
