I completely agree, and I do exactly the same thing.

Whenever I'm working as root, I'd be much happier reading Usenet news, and
it's much safer for all my users' data. Sure, it has taken a bit of effort
for me to keep porting the "rn" binary to newer OS releases machines since
"rn" development stopped about 1995, but that just shows how important
it is to use the One True Newsreader, not that heretical step-child "trn".

By the way, have you found a way to get gopher to work with that new "https"
protocol?
