Re: [PLUG] low footprint linux boxen for streaming video

This isn't quite an answer to your question, but thought I would chime in with my current solution.

I've dropped the entire machine attached to the tv (got to annoying for me without hdmi out on my old boxes) and got a chromecast. Plex media server runs like a dream on my arch server, and has good chromecast support via a browser or android device.

The big downside is plex requires a small paid subscription for chromecast support, though this wasn't an issue for me as I wanted to support the project.

Actually xbmc works very well on raspberry pi and you can store your videos on an nfs share on an actual desktop.   I had this set up at one point using an nfs share on an actual desktop to a raspberry pi running arch with a wireless keyboard.   I ended up using my raspberry pi for something else later on, but it streamed very well with xbmc+nfs mount.
